800HP of efficiency: GD Energy Products powering SiteTec’s pumping unit for Klever

Pumping units are used to pump drilling fluids to the drill rig during horizontal or vertical drilling. As drilling crews in Europe, and in the Netherlands in particular, start demanding more efficiency every time, maximum horsepower is needed. And that’s where GD Energy Products comes in. This article dives into SiteTec’s partnership with this trusted name in the industry and the result of their collaboration: the powerful P3500E, custom-built for Klever. 

150 Years of expertise in pump engineering

It’s mid-November, and the SiteTec offices are blanketed in the first hints of winter. Edgar Rodriguez, Sales Manager at GD Energy Products (formerly known as Gardner Denver), visits to see the P3500E firsthand. The unit, designed for Klever – a prominent name in Dutch drilling – is a milestone of engineering, seamlessly integrating maximum horsepower in an appealing design.

“We have been building or assembling pumps since the 1800s,” Edgar explains. “Our roots are in the oil and gas sector, and in 2019, we introduced the specific HDD line. By leveraging our experience, we developed three models which combine the best of both worlds: the 250HDD, 500HDD and 800HDD. SiteTec’s P3500E features the first 800HDD pump sold in Europe. Two 500HDD pumps have already been delivered, with another three 250HDD pumps currently en route to Wijk bij Duurstede.”

Authorised partnership: combining knowledge and experience

With the HDD line, GD Energy Products has ventured into a new market. Collaboration with the right packagers is crucial. In 2021, SiteTec reached out to GD Energy Products  for cutting-edge pump technology. SiteTec, already satisfied with earlier Gardner Denver pumps, saw potential in their HDD innovations. By 2023, Edgar was visiting SiteTec’s workshop in Wijk for the first time.

“When I researched the European market, everyone mentioned SiteTec. Their reputation, quality, and customer relationships stood out,” Edgar recalls. “Partnering with SiteTec was an easy decision. In the Netherlands, this partnership is exclusive. This means that customers seeking HDD pumps will work through SiteTec to ensure the highest-quality packages.”

Big power, small footprint: specifications and features

Despite delivering 800 horsepower, the 800HDD pump is remarkably compact and lightweight. Edgar elaborates on its design: “The power end of the pump comes from our cementing pumps in the oil and gas sector, where compactness is essential for legal highway transit. We had to come out with a very compact powerend, the same one we are using now for HDD. So a packager like SiteTec is very happy, because you have a very small footprint in the package. You can walk around the pump easily. For maintenance this is ideal.”

A perfect match: P3500E and the 800HDD from GD Energy Products

Efficiency is key in Dutch drilling, where demand for quicker operations continues to grow. “If you drill for big pipes you need bigger pumps,” Edgar explains. “But primarily, larger pumps help finish the job faster, reducing costs.” 

The 800HDD is the largest in GD’s HDD line and is now making its European debut on Klever’s job site. Beyond horsepower, it’s the superior quality of GD’s components that appeals to seasoned professionals. “The technology in our components is the same as that used in oil and gas, where conditions are much more demanding. Especially in fracking, where fluid is pumped into the rock under high pressure through the borehole. We offer the Red Line, which represents the very best consumables for the fracking industry, drilling, and now also HDD. Valves, pistons… they’re all designed to last significantly longer. This durability means fewer replacements and reduced downtime in the field,” Edgar points out.

A robust design that ensures smooth operation and extends the lifespan of wear parts – now you know why Klever chose to customise their unit with GD’s highest-capacity pump.

At SiteTec’s workshop, the P3500E undergoes extensive testing before heading to the field. Thanks to its fully electric design, the testing can now be conveniently conducted indoors. For this purpose, SiteTec has brought in a specially equipped 1000Kva generator. During testing, the unit pumps 3,500 litres at 70 bar. The trial runs are conducted at various power levels, including at least one full day at maximum capacity. During the testing phase, rig master Bart van den Perk visits the workshop. He is pleasantly surprised by the pump’s accessibility within the unit, noting how easy it is to move around it.
